Historically Significant Stanley E. Bogdan 00 Salmon Reel
For sale is my personal S.E. Bogdan 00 single action Salmon reel. Right hand wind.
Here are the details (all told to me directly from Stan Bogdan) on this historically significant reel:
Here are the details (all told to me directly from Stan Bogdan) on this historically significant reel:
Made by Stan in 1962, the reel was made for Stan’s best friend, B.E. “Ted” Bensinger.
Ted was the former owner of AMF, Mercury Marine, as well as Brunswick Billiards, and was the person who had the idea of merging Atlantic Salmon and Int. Salmon groups into the ASF. According to Stan, “Ted Bensinger was the first person who ever took me Salmon fishing in Canada”, and was a person significantly impacting the production of Bogdan reels from the start.
Stan told me “Ted believed in me when I didn’t even believe in myself”.
The reel is a Right hand wind, single action salmon reel, and was made with a very rare, “roller guide” on the back side of the reel, so Bensinger could fish it “rings up – Canadian style” as well.
There is mention of Bensinger fishing his Bogdan this way in the book Bogdan, by Graydon Hilyard.
I always have fished it the normal way, reel down, winding with the right hand.
The reel has been fished and shows scratches along the bottom of the Champagne frame from years of fishing, but nothing major at all for this 50+ year old reel.
Face plate is factory drilled/ventilated, and has “B.E. Bensinger” engraved along the bottom. Otherwise excellent shape, and 100% mechanically.
I have owned this reel for approximately 25 years, and had an incredible opportunity to fish this reel with Stan in 2007 on the Upsalquich River in New Brunswick.
During the time I was there, Stan gave me all the details listed above on this reel, and also completely disassembled and inspected the reel while I watched.
He went into detail about Ted Bensinger, and became very emotional when describing their friendship.
This was actually the last time I ever fished this reel, and Stan even fished it one afternoon when we traded rods in the boat, so Stan could try out my Thomas Salmon rod.
This historic reel comes with its original suede drawstring bag, and is fitted with an 8wt line and 150 yds of backing.
I will be happy to provide a signed letter of provenance along with this reel at your request.

Item #1500 Excellent Condition SOLD
Stanley Bogdan, a maker of fly fishing reels so coveted that anglers were willing to spend years on a waiting list to buy them and then to pay far more than they would have for reels of only ordinary excellence, died March 27 in Nashua, N.H. He was 92 and a lifetime Nashua resident.
His death was confirmed by his son, Stephen.
In fly fishing, in particular fly fishing for the mighty Atlantic salmon, owning a Bogdan reel signals high seriousness about the sport and, not infrequently, a fair amount of disposable income. Many expert anglers consider it the finest reel ever made, a synthesis of incomparable engineering and aesthetic elegance.
Yet many fly fishermen, unless they have spent time on the classic salmon rivers in places like Quebec and the Maritimes, may have actually seen precious few Bogdans, let alone dared to dream of owning one. In a sport that is already expensive, they are content to pair their fly rods with any number of fine reels that will provide many years of service for a few hundred dollars.
A new Bogdan, on the other hand, ranges in price from about $1,500 for the smallest trout reel to about $2,400 for the biggest salmon reel. Hand-tooled by Stanley and Stephen Bogdan in their shops in New Hampshire — originally in Nashua and then in New Ipswich — Bogdan reels could not be rushed. Only 100 or so have been produced a year, and it has not been unusual for buyers to have to wait three or four years for delivery.
“Almost from day one, there has been The Waiting List, a sort of secular purgatory on the way to achieving tackle bliss,” Graydon R. Hilyard wrote in his biography “Bogdan” (Frank Amato, 2006). “How long must you dwell therein, who can tell? As the dreaded list has never actually been seen, your position on it can never be determined.”
Continue reading the main storyIts salmon reels are what S. E. Bogdan Custom Built, the company’s official name, is best known for. What sets them apart and makes them so expensive is their innovative system for controlling “drag,” the adjustable resistance by which a properly handled reel tires and ultimately controls a powerful game fish.
Stanley Bogdan invented a braking system for his reels that allowed for drag of extraordinary smoothness and strength, greatly decreasing the chance that the fish of a lifetime would be able to strain and break an angler’s line. A Bogdan may not help you hook more fish, but it will help you land more of the fish you hook — and much more stylishly.
Stanley Edward Bogdan, one of four children of Polish immigrants, was born on Dec. 16, 1918, in Nashua. Like his father, a machinist, he had good mechanical aptitude, and after finishing high school he went to work at the Rollins Engine Company in Nashua, a manufacturer of steam engines. From an early age he had a deep interest in fishing, hunting and the outdoors. His entry in his high school yearbook was prescient, noting that the young man “could work miracles with fishing tackle.”
For years Mr. Bogdan made what reels he could on the side while working as a machinist and raising a family. His big break came in 1955 when he entered into a deal to provide reels to the original Abercrombie & Fitch, that era’s big retailer of high-end sporting goods. A few years later he struck a deal with Orvis, and gradually word spread that there was no fly fishing reel quite like the one being made by the friendly, smiling, occasionally contrary Yankee in Nashua, N.H.

Mr. Bogdan’s wife, Phyllis, died in 1995. In addition to his son, Stephen, of New Ipswich, he is survived by a daughter, Cheryl Doughty, of Palm Bay, Fla.
Stephen Bogdan, 61, started working with his father in 1973 and became the company’s sole owner in 1996.
A passionate and accomplished angler in his own right, Stanley Bogdan was devoted to the Atlantic salmon and pursued it on the sport’s best rivers. “He was a very, very good salmon angler,” said Bill Taylor, the president of the Atlantic Salmon Federation.
Last September, Stanley Bogdan, at 91, caught a 32-pound salmon on the Grand Cascapedia River in Quebec. “I believe that was his last fish,” Stephen Bogdan said.
Stanley Bogdan--perhaps the finest reelmaker the world of fly-fishing has ever known--passed away last night at the age of 92. I wrote about Stan and his reels in the 4/13/09 issue of Forbes, as part of a cover package about consumer items that would always be recession-proof. His reels were true functional art.
Later that year I went to a party given in his honor. When Stan saw me, he (literally) ran across the room and grabbed me by my ears (he was a foot shorter than I), pulled me down and planted a big scruffy kiss on my cheek. "You've made an old man very happy," he said.
I told Stan that he had spent his entire life doing the same for the rest of us. He will be deeply missed.
I've included my 2009 Forbes story below.
The Reel Deal
For $2,200 you can own a Bogdan. Slightly more if you want one used.
This exclusive club includes Bing Crosby, Benny Goodman, Ted Williams, Prince Philip, the Duke of Wellington and Paul Volcker. At one time or other they all cranked in silvery salmon with Bogdan fishing reels, known for their strength and distinctive styles: matte black plates, champagne-gold spools and S-shaped handles. Still handmade by 90-year-old Stanley Bogdan and his son Stephen, 59, the reels come in 15 sizes--to haul in Atlantic salmon or the smallest trout. They cost between $1,300 and $2,200.
The Bogdans are navigating this recession just as they have every other one over the last seven decades: by staying small and doing things their own way. Every part of a Bogdan reel, save for the springs, is tooled by Stanley or Stephen, S.E. Bogdan Custom Built's sole employees. In their garage-size shop in New Ipswich, N.H. stands a table littered with dozens of boxes, each containing different parts of a fly-fishing reel: discs of stainless steel, screws, brake shoes, anodized aluminum frames and spools. Armed with a 130-year-old Flather lathe and a 50-year-old Van Norman milling machine, the pair churn out only 100 reels a year and have a three-year backlog. They hold no patents, take no deposits from customers ("That way they can't bug me, and I have control," says Stanley), store no files, designs or accounts on a computer (they don't own one) and do no advertising.
A short man with fine white hair, Stanley, who never attended college, made his first reel in 1940 while an apprentice at Rollins Engine Co., a steam-engine maker. At night he worked on his reels, going full-time in 1955. "I was petrified," he admits, but soon was filling orders for Abercrombie & Fitch and, later, Orvis. Annoyed at surrendering 40% of the $100 retail price, Bogdan became his own sole distributor in 1977, taking orders by phone or mail. Stephen bought him out in 1996, but Stanley is still in the shop three days a week. "I'm quality control," he says.
The beauty of a Bogdan is in the drag--the mechanical resistance that slows down a hooked fish. Stanley invented a double-brake system using two brake shoes supported by springs that clamp down on a disc. There are ten settings to choose from, depending on the size of the fish. The result is a smooth drag with no hitches that could break off a fleeing fish. When taxed by a large salmon, the drag makes a distinct whirring sound--or, in the words of Royall Victor III, a retired Chase Manhattan executive who owns six Bogdans, "the muted joy of exultation." To that add the powerful pull of exclusivity. Owning a Bogdan "puts you into the specially anointed of salmon fishers," says former U.S. Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker. Bozo Ivanovic, a retired London ship broker, famed fisherman and owner of four Bogdans, sums it simply: "Finally getting your Bogdan is an event."
Antsy anglers go to great lengths to try to speed up delivery. Some have offered double the price, says Stanley, but he rarely budges. At one party a man lifted his shirt to reveal scars from a recent bypass surgery as evidence that he had only a short time to live and thus should be moved up the waiting list. Bogdan fell for it. The man eventually got his reel, then lived another 15 years.
The Bogdans have made one concession to demand. A few years ago, after seeing what the used reels were fetching online, they doubled their prices overnight. That still didn't close the gap: Even in the midst of the recession, used Bogdans are going for up to $3,000 on Ebay--36% more than the most expensive model sold new. "I thought [raising the price] would be the end of us," says Stanley. "Turned out to be the best move I ever made."
